The reaming shell is part of an overall drilling system that includes a core bit, a core retrieval device (core barrel assembly), the drill string (rods) and the drill rig itself.

The cutting media on the reaming shell may take the form of natural drill diamond on the D-Series type, a combination of synthetic diamond and natural drill diamond on the Heavy Duty type, multi ring Stabilized Reaming Shells or strips of tungsten-carbide deposits.
