Bit Crown Profiles

Bit Crown Profiles for Surface-Set Diamond Core Bits cont'd

Radial Profile
(Style ‘A’)

Radial Profile

The application of this bit crown profile is primarily for use on wide kerf, large diameter surface-set diamond core bits that are used to drill medium-hard, abrasive, unconsolidated formations. These crowns are normally set with larger sizes of natural drill diamond (>10 SPC). This bit crown profile is limited to core bits with a minimum outside set diameter of 4.70 inch (119.4 mm), a minimum inside set diameter of 2.10 inch (53.3 mm) and a minimum kerf width of 1.30 inch (33.0 mm).

Conical Profile
(Style ‘E’)

Conical Profile

The application of this bit crown profile is primarily for use on wide kerf, large diameter surface-set diamond core bits that are used to drill medium-hard, consolidated formations with relatively low compressive strengths. For large diameter core bits, this profile will yield better penetration rates and stabilization than other profiles and is recommended in place of the Stepped (Style ‘S’) profile where the kerf width exceeds 0.80 inch (20.3 mm). These crowns are normally set with larger sizes of natural drill diamond (>25 SPC). This bit crown profile is limited to core bits with a minimum outside set diameter of 3.30 inch (83.8 mm), a minimum inside set diameter of 2.10 inch (53.3 mm) and a minimum kerf width of 0.60 inch (15.2 mm).

Bi-Conical Profile
(Style ‘D’)

Bi-Conical Profile

The application of this bit crown profile is exclusively for use on wide kerf, large diameter surface-set diamond core bits that are used to drill relatively soft, abrasive, formations with low compressive strengths. These crowns are normally set with larger sizes of natural drill diamond (>10 SPC). The Bi-Conical (Style ‘D’) profile produces a compact bit crown and will tend to yield better penetration rates and stabilization when compared to the Round (Style ‘BY’) profile. The Bi-Conical (Style ‘D’) bit crown profile is limited to core bits with a minimum outside set diameter of 4.70 inch (119.4 mm), a minimum inside set diameter of 2.10 inch (53.3 mm) and a minimum kerf width of 1.30 inch (33.0 mm).
